About Santorini
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater).
The island was the location of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history the Minoan eruption, which passed about,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera ringed by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of measures deep.
It’s the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains here and now is overall a water- filled caldera. The volcanic arc is roughly 500 km (300 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3 – 4 million years ago, though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around Akrotiri.
Santorini attracts visitors with its enchanting setting, its spectacular multicolored beaches (white, red or black sand), its typical Greek houses and its turquoise waters. This archipelago promises wonder and enchantment to its tourists.
